What does the sun do to our skin?

Although sunshine on our skin feels great, each minute spent absorbing it’s damaging rays unprotected is cumulative. Eighty percent of our sun damage occurs before age 20, and the permanent side effects don’t appear for another twenty years. The sunburn, or tanning response, is simply an inflammation response to the harmful UVB rays of the sun when overexposed. Over time, the skin’s pigment producing cells become damaged and permanently produce excess pigmentation in the form of unsightly brown spots. Invisible UVA rays are present from sunrise to sunset, and do not vary in their constant strength. This type of invisible radiation penetrates to the deeper layer of skin. It is there that the collagen and elastin layers, which support our skin are damaged resulting in premature and excessive wrinkling. Finally, cumulative damage over time can result in skin cancer.

…Study after study has shown that prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer, premature wrinkling, dehydration and a laundry list of other conditions…

Warnings about over sun exposure have been around for years, yet the number of skin cancer cases linked to excessive exposure continues to rise.

Looking Tan’s self-tanners and airbrush tanning supplies offer a safe, alternative to over-exposure of dangerous ultraviolet rays.

Over sun exposure can be extremely harmful, and recent research findings show there may be an association between UVA radiation and melanoma. UV radiation causes skin cancer...

A Sun Tan is not safe…Period

Even if you get a nominal amount of color, and you slowly tan without burning, UV damage is done. A moderate amount of sun also produces damaging effects....

Please, Please, Please remember the following:

  • Always apply Suntan lotion! Anytime you are outside, suntan lotion should be applied. The theory that your body "needs" sunlight is just an inaccurate rationalization. A nominal amount of sunlight is needed for the body to manufacture vitamin D, but it doesn't take much sunlight to compose all the vitamin D your body needs.
  • The number of skin cancer cases has been increasing recently. Experts say that this is due to increasing exposure to UV radiation from the sun. More than 1.5 million new skin cancer cases are likely to be diagnosed in the U.S. this year.
  • Most long term sun damage occurs in your teens. Skin aging and melanoma are delayed effects that don't usually show up until much after the exposure. Unfortunately, since the damage is not immediate, teens are unaware of the damage they are doing to their skin. Most sun damage occurs before age 20, with the damaging effects not showing up until later in life.
